Kia ora and Welcome

Over the past three years that I have been principal at Paeroa Central School, I have enjoyed learning and growing alongside students, staff, whanau and community.

We have made a good start. If you as parents and whanau are asking questions about your child’s schooling and the school they will likely attend, the things that most parents and whanau consider may be the following –

• A safe and caring environment

• Sporting and cultural opportunities,

• The school’s academic results,

• Does it have well-kept buildings and grounds.

These things are important. They matter. What kind of young people are we encouraging our students to become? At Paeroa Central School we believe in raising -

“Young People who are confident, connected, actively involved lifelong learners (New Zealand Curriculum) and who are living confidently and proudly as Maori(Te Marautanga o Aotearoa).”

Being confident (Mana Tū), connected (Mana Whenua), actively involved (Mana Tangatarua) and living confidently with a strong cultural identity (Mana Ūkaipo) are qualities that we should be valuing and pursuing in our schools and should be the ultimate measure of effectiveness.

The character and vision of our school is about both learning and growth: ‘Ko te ako. Ko te tipu ake.’ Striving for excellence together.

Being a Dual Medium school, I believe we have chosen the right pathways, recognising that education in both English and Māori Medium encourages excellent learning and a progressive connectedness for all our students.

Ngā mihi nui,

Mona Hingston
