Ko Hauraki te Iwi
Our school acknowledges and recognises all Hauraki Iwi. When establishing the school’s Rūmaki Unit, the following iwi were identified as strongly represented within our school – Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāti Hako, Ngāti Tara Tokanui, Ngāti Paoa and the hapū Ngāti Tawhaki. Within our school charter, guided by the school’s vision we will show our commitment to the revitalisation of Haurakitanga |
Paeroa Central School is a dual medium primary school located in the rural town of Paeroa.
The school is 140 years old and currently operates 4 classrooms with a roll of approximately 80 students. We have two English Medium classes and two Māori Medium Level 1 Rūmaki classes. In the Rūmaki classes, Te Ara Hou o te Reo, 80-100% of learning is in Te Reo Māori. Auraki (English) Medium students also have lessons in Te Reo Māori working within Level 4 Te Reo Māori. All students have the opportunity to join Kapa Haka and work towards performing at the Hauraki Festival in Term 4.
Each class has a teacher aide or kaiawhina. Some support staff also run small group learning programmes. All children are supported with their learning. We have a school wide focus on literacy: te reo Matatini and numeracy: Pāngarau. We have a cultural curriculum linked to our unique area Hauraki. This includes hītori (history), pūrākau (traditional stories) and kawa me ngā tikanga (rules that are set).
We are an Enviro school and in Term 2 and 3, learning is student driven where practical activities are tied to learning about sustainability. Students may cook, work in the school vegetable gardens and orchard, make ointments using rongoā, design and paint murals, and/or work with local community. Our students strive to be excellent Kaitiaki (Guardians).
We strongly promote Sport and Education Outside the Classroom programmes.

Kia ora e te whānau.
What a wonderful first week back at kura. We had over 95% attendance, a great start to the year!
On Tuesday we welcomed new students, whānau and staff to our kura with a pōwhiri held in Ranginui (Room 1). The space was jam-packed with manuhiri and tangata whenua, bringing the kura alive with the sound of karanga, kōrero and waiata.
“Hauraki ki Uta, Hauraki ki Tai, Hauraki Kowhao Rau.”
Hauraki people will thrive — each voice, each waiata, each presence contributing to the heartbeat of our kura.
Nau mai, haere mai nui ki tō tātou kaiako hou,
ko Andrea Te Ohaere-Fox rāua ko Kelly Caldwell.
Whaea Andrea comes to our kura from Ōtautahi and is an experienced kaiako in Rumaki Reo. She will be teaching in Ureia, our Years 3–5 tamariki.
Whaea Kelly is an experienced ECE kaiako and joins Mumuhau Teina (Years 1–5) from Monday to Wednesday this term.
We are also excited to welcome new ākonga and whānau to our kura:
Hinerauaamoa, Kahukura and Poutokomanawa Titore-Herbert;
Manahau and Anatia Ohaere-Fox;
Illa-Mei Nikora Young-Kingi; and Max Tauranga.
A warm welcome back to our returning students
Al-Louise Ramea and Ella-May Calvey-Hudson-Harris.
Nau mai, haere mai ki a tātou katoa.
It has been great to see many of our students coming to school well prepared, carrying a school bag with togs, towel, drink bottle, and snacks for morning tea — such organised and prepared ākonga! They have also been enthusiastic learners over the three days; perhaps it’s because parents and whānau are just as excited to send them back to kura to grow their learning. Keep it up, whānau — only 39 school weeks to go! ????
